Post three: Meet the Developer: Tom Watts (17/07/2022)

By Tom Watts
@_busyguy

Hi there! I'm Tom, I'm the developer for ThatBlindLadsMedia.co.uk - a project which i've been passionately watching for some time now and when Jamie wanted to build a website I just wanted to oblige and help out the best I can....

"I absolutely love video games, even if it means shooting your own enemies!"

I'm not going to harp on about the technical background of building this site (although if you're interested let us know!) But I am very passionate about technology and always have been, I struggled a lot as a child to deal with various parts of life, (probably mostly to do with my eyesight, who knows?) but computers gave me that outlet, i'm lucky in that I still have enough sight to code and play video games, although I am very limited in what I can do / play. I have to make the settings as bright and large as possible but I get by.

So a bit about me, I'm a software developer and I work for a company mostly writing automation these days whilst I am involved in quality assurance processes and other things like performance analysis. I've become really passionate about trying to make things as accessible as I can, I hope you find the site nice & accessible! I am striving to continue building websites and tools as a side project but I would also like to freelance one day. If you ever need a website, app, etc, built, I am avaliable to help! You can find me on Twitter or on my website.

Outside of work I enjoy streaming on Twitch, I absolutely love video games, even if it means shooting your own enemies! Seriously, there is a clip of me shooting my own pig in Hogs of War because I couldn't tell the difference between Grey & Green... I got a good laugh out of it though!

That's the key isn't it, have a good laugh! Don't take life too seriously, everyone in the world has struggles, so don't focus on the things you can't do, and focus on the things YOU CAN. A big interest of mine is music, I made a commitment to go to more gigs as my wife also wanted to go, and so we did! We saw Madness over the past weekend as well as The Hoosiers & The Zutons, was a great night

I'm a father and a husband, my son keeps me very active but it certainly is the best lifestyle I could ask for. I wouldn't to post a quick something to say hello really, it's nothing special but just a quick note from the developer. Hope you enjoyed reading it, take care!

People often think disability is something we choose to happen to us so that we can reap the benefits but actually, disability for most of us if not everyone is not a choice, its something we are either born with or diagnosed with in later life through no fault of our own...

"I am very passionate about disability as I am disabled myself and have been for many years."

The perks of having a disability are many and I have experienced these perks throughout my life as a disabled person since I was diagnosed with epilepsy, a global development delay and moderate learning disabilities. I have achieved things I would never have thought I would achieve such as gaining a place at Liverpool John Moores University to study a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching degree, having a big twitter network of people from around the UK who share a wealth of experience or even learning to walk again after I was wheelchair bound for a few years when I was younger.

I joined FC PHAB in 2019 after I met my coach Stephen on a futsal course and since then I have settled into the team really well with coaches and teammates who have supported me to push myself to the limit and to believe I can do whatever I put my mind to but, in this case, going to university and coming out with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in Sports Coaching.

I really can’t thank my coaches Stephen and Niall enough along with others such as Mark from Liverpool County FA and his colleague and friend Stuart among others who have shown me that anything really is possible and the more work you put in, the more you will get out of it and the more successful you will become in the future.

Disability can bring many great things into your life. I have met some great people who have given their time and effort to help me to get far in life and who have motivated me even further to make a difference to other disabled people who may not have had the same sporting opportunities that I have had over the years. I have had great support from the tutors at Liverpool John Moores University in Liverpool who have supported me through thick and thin in my journey so far throughout the first year of my degree and I have every faith they will continue to do so.

Finding out I was ‘disabled’ at first, I was like ‘what does this mean for me, my family and for the future?’, ‘what school will I go to?’ and other questions such as ‘will life ever be the same again?’ were a few questions that had gone through my head but then I stopped to think for a minute and I was like ‘I can do this, I’m going to show the people who don’t think I can achieve what I can do’. The main motivation for me that gets me up and out and about every morning is the fact that I am disabled, there have been plenty of people who think that I can’t achieve and there’s just a part of me that wants to prove them wrong.

I went through the special education system throughout my life both in primary and secondary school but when I went to college, it was very different. University is great and I am proud to be here as I feel very privileged to even have got a place on the course and sometimes it is challenging but I get through it and I am very much looking forward to the future.

Post one: An Introduction to the blog (04/05/2022)

By Jamie McAllister
@ThatBlindLad

Welcome to the new website and also, a new blog. This is where you will find blogs every other week from myself, Jamie and many other people within the disability community.I’ll be honest, I don’t really have much to say here, but, I want everyone to know this is a place for all, no matter your writing ability, as long as you are passionate about your topic in question, that is all I ask...

For now, writing blogs for the website is voluntary as I’m not really in a position to pay but hope to be in the future. This is all done out of enjoyment and passion, sharing other disabled peoples stories will never get boring for me, hence the podcast.For now, writing blogs for the website is voluntary as I’m not really in a position to pay but hope to be in the future. Finally, I want to say thank you to Tom for making this all possible, he is the one who has made this website what it is, in his own time which I couldn’t be more grateful for.

If you want to get involved with anything on the site, then head to the contact page and get in touch.
